A beginner-friendly introduction to eFoiling at Lake Nõuni in Otepää – how an electric hydrofoil board lets you fly silently above calm water, even on a windless day.

Flying above the water on Lake Nõuni

Imagine standing on a board that quietly rises out of the water and carries you forward as if you were flying just above the surface. No engine noise, no spray, no wind required – only smooth, silent gliding. That is the feeling of an eFoil, and the calm, wind-sheltered waters of Lake Nõuni in Otepää are a wonderful place to try it for the first time.

What is an eFoil?

An eFoil is a battery-powered surfboard with an electric motor and a hydrofoil – an underwater wing mounted on a mast beneath the board. As you pick up speed, the foil generates lift and raises the whole board clear of the surface, so instead of plowing through the water you glide above it with almost no splash. The sensation is remarkably smooth: once the board lifts onto the foil, it feels like quietly flying a few centimetres over the lake.

You set your speed with a handheld wireless throttle, while your height above the water is controlled mainly by subtly shifting your body weight fore and aft – lean back a touch to rise, ease forward to settle lower. The throttle handles the pace; your balance handles the flight. A typical battery gives roughly one to two hours of ride time, depending on rider weight, speed and conditions.

Silent and emission-free

Because the motor is electric, an eFoil is quiet and emission-free. There is no fuel, no exhaust and no roar – just the soft sound of the water passing beneath you. That makes it a perfect fit for the peaceful nature of Otepää, where the point of being on the lake is to enjoy the calm rather than disturb it.

No wind or waves needed

Unlike windsurfing, an eFoil is self-propelled: it needs no wind, no waves, no tow rope and no boat to pull you along. That means it works beautifully on a flat, calm day, which is exactly when Lake Nõuni is at its most sheltered and inviting. So the eFoil is a great companion to our windsurfing: when there is wind, grab a sail; when the lake is glassy and still, the eFoil is waiting.

Is it hard to learn?

With a little instruction, most people get the feel of an eFoil surprisingly quickly. You squeeze the throttle gently to accelerate and ease off to slow down, so you are always in charge of the pace. Most beginners are up on their knees and moving within the first 15–30 minutes, and many rise onto the foil and start to fly within a session or two of guided practice. Beginners typically progress through a few natural stages:

  • Lying down – get a feel for the board and the throttle while staying low and stable.
  • Kneeling – build confidence and balance as the board gains speed.
  • Standing – rise to your feet and cruise along the surface.
  • Rising onto the foil – add a touch more speed and the board lifts up, and you start to fly.

Taking it one step at a time, with an instructor guiding you, makes the learning curve gentle and the progress genuinely rewarding. And there is no need to go fast: a comfortable beginner cruising speed is gentle, around 13–24 km/h, well below what an eFoil can actually do. You choose the pace that feels right.

Staying safe on the foil

With proper instruction, eFoiling suits a wide range of ages, and a few simple habits keep it that way. Always wear a helmet and a life vest, keep your speed comfortable while you learn, and follow your instructor’s guidance at every stage. The calm, enclosed setting of Lake Nõuni adds an extra margin of comfort for first-timers compared with open water.

The handheld remote is more than a throttle – it is also a safety device. It pairs with a magnetic kill-switch that you clip to your wrist or vest, so if you fall off, the connection breaks and the motor stops instantly. The board simply settles in the water beside you rather than carrying on without you, which makes those first wobbles far less daunting.
